PRESS RELEASE OF THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY
21 October 2010

The Hungary-Serbia IPA Cross-border Co-operation Programme implemented within the 2007-2013 European Union financial framework has the main objective to promote good neighbourly relations. The Programme is financed from a pre-accession instrument (Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance) which has approximately 50 million Euro available for financing until 2013. On 20 october 2010, 69 Subsidy Contracts have been signed with Applicants who have successfully applied for support within the 1st Call for Proposals. The contracted projects have available more than 18 million Euro  of EU funds for co-financing project activities during the following one and a half year.

The long term overall aim of the Hungary-Serbia IPA Cross-border Co-operation Programme is to facilitate the development of a harmonic and cooperating region with sustainable and safe environment. In this co-operating region, the common cultural and natural heritage is successfully managed together and the opportunities of economy and culture are extended by increased business, educational, research and cultural relations, resulting in the creation of jobs, while the isolating effects of the external border rules are minimised.

The eligible area of the Programme covers Csongrád and Bács-Kiskun Counties in Hungary and the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Serbia (Zapadno-bački, Severno-bački, Severnobanatski, Juzno-Bački, Srednje-banatski) with South-Banat and Srem involved as adjacent regions.

The 1st Call for Proposals within the framework of the Programme was closed on 31 December, 2009. By the deadline, 170 projects were submitted to the Joint Technical Secretariat of the Programme. Educational co-operation, ‘people-to-people’ co-operation, business partner match-making and research and development were the most popular actions promoted by the Call for Proposals. The requested IPA subsidy for the submitted project proposals amounted to 37,5 million EUR, which is twice the amount of the available funds for the 1st Call for Proposals. the Joint Monitoring and Steering Committee (JMSC) selected for financing 71 project out of the 170 on its 2nd meeting held on 28 April, 2010. Within the framework of the 1st Call for Proposals 16,6 million EUR was available for funding selected projects. Since a large number of high-quality Applications were submitted, the JMSC decided to over-commit the available funds.

The 2nd Call for Proposals of the Hungary-Serbia IPA CBC Programme is to be expected in November 2010 and more than 12 million EUR funds will be available for co-financing selected projects.
